Why is there so much bad taste in modern religion?

I'm sorry, and I don't want to hurt anybody as I have gone through periods of my life when I have found great comfort in religion, but I look at so much of modern religion and can't believe how tacky it all is. I am Catholic, and my church used to have beautiful cathedrals, chants, Latin, incense, solmenity and now I walk into the M and it's akin to a circus with cheesy songs, hand holding, trite homilies, hideous liturgical architecture...how does one find spirituality in such an environment of ugliness. I remember my friend telling me that he missed the old days when even atheists would go to M because it was an escape from the general culture. It's not just Catholicism, the megachurches are outrageously cheesy...who gets taken in by people like Ted Haggard, Jim Bakker, The Crouch Family, etc. Just looks so vulgar. Does God hate bad taste as much as I do?
